Red Sparrow Dutifully Brings Audiences Along for the Ride

March 2, 2018March 7, 2018

Red Sparrow is a fine enough flick, but certainly not needing to be seen in theaters. If you are into spy movies or JLaw then yeah, check it out as it dives headlong into an arena not frequently explored, but past that it doesn’t elevate the genre.

Game Night Is A Hilarious Night Out With Friends

Game Night is fantastic! The conceit, that a game night featuring a murder mystery plot goes off the rails is fine and fun and watching the cast who are unaware of the mixup react is hysterical.

Annihilation is another astounding film from Garland and I expect it to be looked on as a masterwork for years to come. If you’re in the U.S. and you enjoy sci-fi get out and see this movie in the loudest theater near you. It’s a helluva treat.

Wakanda Forever! You’re Seeing Black Panther This Weekend, Right?

Black Panther’s real strength is in the world and characters. Wakanda is a sci-fi wonderland in the heart of Africa, but still steeped in a tribal community and traditions. It is a rad balance.

So even though Fifty Shades Freed was bland, I say thank you, E.L James, AKA Snowqueens Icedragon, for all the love, laughter, and fantastic music these past three years.

Den of Thieves is the tale of several unlikable thieves planning a heist while a crew of more unlikable cops works to try and stop them. Try rewatching the Fast and the Furious films.

The Commuter, Taking the 8 AM to Sunday Afternoon Matineeville

The Commuter is genuinely tense for the first maybe two thirds, the audience is in the dark about the nature of what’s happening. There is a conspiracy and bad guys seem to be everywhere, but the last act drags a bit and has some really uninspiring moments.

The nicest, most polite and charming movie of the year (and maybe ever?) is here! Paddington 2 sees Ben Whishaw return and teach us: so long as we are kind and polite, the world will be right!

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – Better Than it Has Any Right to Be

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is the comedic sequel of a 90s children’s movie we didn’t know we wanted, put together by a bunch of comedic goons who get the angle of those who grew up with it. It is better than expected, but not nearly as magical as the original.

Pitch Perfect 3 is the perfect action-comedy that hits all the right notes and avoids all the pitfalls it experienced in the second movie.
