WonderCon 2019 Weekend Highlights

Con season continues to go strong this month as we ease into WonderCon weekend in Anaheim. Although it’s a shorter weekend than it’s sister convention San Diego Comic-Con, this is the convention to go to for a sneak peek at the upcoming media before the summer kicks off. From television shows to Netflix Originals to comics and board games to blockbuster movies, this weekend has it all! Get your tickets ready and put on your walking shoes, it’s WonderCon Weekend!

Comixology Originals: What’s Next

The biggest news in comics is comiXology’s exclusive digital content program: comiXology Originals. Now you can join comiXology’s head of content Chip Mosher, writer Jim Zub and artist Max Dunbar to get the scoop on an all-new, recently announced, comiXology Originals series, Stone Star (available now!) direct from the creators making it! They’ll wow the crowd with stories on the process of bringing creator-owned comics to life and what it’s like pushing the envelope with digital comics and beyond. Moderated by comiXology’s Kiersten Wing.
Legion M believes that a community of united fans can revolutionize Hollywood, so, they’ve built their entertainment company from the ground up to be owned entirely by fans! You may have heard about their films Colossal (Anne Hathaway), Mandy (Nicolas Cage), and Kevin Smith’s upcoming Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, their TV projects like Evermor and Malice, or their events like Stan Lee’s tribute at the TCL Chinese Theatre and their Sundance Lounge. Legion M co-founders Jeff Annison and Paul Scanlan and some special panelists will discuss how data driven technology of Silicon Valley gives Legion M an edge in Hollywood by harnessing the power of their investors’ insight into the entertainment they love, plus upcoming projects, and how you can own a piece of Hollywood!

LGBT and Minority Hosts: How to Break Through

Representation matters, as reflected from the countless positive reactions from those who see themselves depicted on screen. From Buzzfeed and Nerdist to Hyper RPG, hosts grow in number from LGBTQIA and minority backgrounds across various outlets. They bring fresh perspectives and open our minds to new point of views. Aspiring hosts can divulge in the wisdom of those who have worked smart and hard to carve out a career in hosting. Jessica Tseang (comic book historian, AMC’s Secret History of Comics), Chris Lam (Buzzfeed personality, writer/host for GammaRay TV), Dani Fernandez (host for Nerdist, writer for Comedy Central), Markeia McCarty (host of DC Daily on DC Universe, Fangirling at Nerdist), Malik Forté (esports host, Crewham founder), and Arisce Wanzer(supermodel, host for LA Pride/Grindr’s What the Flip) will give their success stories and tips to breaking into the industry. A Q&A will follow.
Tolkien

Actor Nicholas Hoult, director Dome Karukoski, and additional cast including Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, and Tom Glynne-Carney will present a sneak peek of Tolkien, the first film to take an in-depth look at the early life of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the legendary novel The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series. Like his books, it’s a story about courage, adventure, love, and the deep unbreakable bond of lifelong friendship. Panel moderated by Cliff Broadway.
FX’s Legion Screening and Q&A
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM @ North 200A
Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, tells the story of David Haller, a man who believed himself schizophrenic only to discover that he may actually be the most powerful mutant the world has ever seen. The executive producers Noah Hawley, John Cameron, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Jeph Loeb, along with cast members Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Navid Negahban, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, and Lauren Tsai will host a conversation about what fans can look forward to in the upcoming third season, premiering on FX later this year.
Become a Board Game Designer

Learn from board game industry professionals Elisa Teague (Geek Out), Kami Mandell (Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle), Pat Marino (Court of the Dead: Mourners Call), and Jon Cohn (Munchkin: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), as they share how to become a board game designer. A Look Inside The Dragon Prince

The team behind Netflix Original animated series The Dragon Prince is bringing you an inside look into the magic of the show. Panelists include creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, along with the voice actors of your favorite family of villains: Jason Simpson (Lord Viren), Racquel Belmonte (Claudia), and Jesse Inocalla (Soren). With Seasons 1 and 2 behind them, you’ll get to hear about how they got to where they are now and what’s on the horizon for the future of The Dragon Prince.
Mary Anne Butler (news editor, Bleeding Cool; EiC, Aggressive Comix), Dana Han-Klein (Mohawk Movie Review), Alexandra August (CBR, ScreenRant), and Thomas Parham (APU) discuss the expansion of journalism over the past decade, from the rise of citizen journalism to blogging to vloggers, podcasters, and online-only news sources. The session will be an interactive conversation with the audience about the role new media plays between their readers and the industries and communities they serve, varying levels of informality versus classic ideas of professionalism, show-specific outlets versus general news sites, moving from hobbyist to being a professional, legal challenges, and more.

Come see an exclusive screening of AMC’s highly-anticipated new supernatural horror series, NOS4A2. Based on the 2013 novel by Joe Hill, NOS4A2, introduces Vic McQueen, a gifted young woman who discovers she has a supernatural ability to find lost things. This ability puts her on a collision course with the evil and immortal Charlie Manx. Manx is a supernatural villain who feeds off the souls of children then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland-a twisted place of Manx’s imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Vic strives to defeat Manx and rescue his victims, without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself. This panel features author Joe Hill,showrunner Jami O’Brien, and cast including Zachary Quinto, Ashleigh Cummings, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Jahkara Smith.
Geek & Sundry: Relics and Rarities

While the description for this presentation is currently empty, you can bet that Warner Bros and New Line will be bringing in some surprises for their hour-long panel in the large auditorium. An incredibly likely candidate is Shazam!, so keep your afternoon open!
Deadly Class

Executive produced by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) and based on the hit graphic novel by Rick Remender and Wes Craig, SYFY’s breakout new series, Deadly Class, follows the story of Marcus, a teen living on the streets who is recruited into King’s Dominion, an elite private academy where the world’s top crime families send their next generations. Cast members Benjamin Wadsworth (Marcus), María Gabriela de Faría (Maria), Luke Tennie (Willie), Liam James (Billy), Taylor Hickson (Petra), and executive producer/co-showrunner Miles Orion Feldsott will go in-depth on the critically acclaimed first season.
