Arrow Broken Dolls (02×03) Review

Synopsis: Quentin teams up with Oliver to stop a criminal from his past, known as the Doll Maker, from committing more murders.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Last week’s episode ended at one heck of a nail-biting scene. I was so excited to see how Oliver would get out of the stand-off with the police. I didn’t account for Black Canary making an entrance but I’m certainly not complaining, I seriously starting to love this mysterious new character. She escapes before Oliver can question her so back at HQ Oliver gets Team Arrow to look into the mysterious heroine. Oliver doesn’t like not being the only morally-ambiguous crime-fighter in town.

But Oliver has to leave the investigation to his new lackey Roy when Quentin goes to the Hood to help catch an escaped criminal named Barton Matis, also known as the Doll Maker. Quentin technically isn’t allowed on the case after how effected he got last time trying to catch the killer.

Oliver and Quentin sneak into the police station to get the files on the Doll Maker’s newest murder and with the help of Felicity’s awesome hacking skills they discover the link between all the victims is the skin cream they use for their delicate skin. Felicity decides to act as bait and buy the cream with Oliver, Diggle and Quentin all watching over her in order to draw out and catch Matis. The plan almost works but Matis manages to escape and when the police show up they arrest Quentin for obstruction. Fortunately Laurel manages to get her father’s charges dropped but they clash on their opposing views of the vigilante.

This week Felicity acts a bait to draw out a notorious killer. This girl really needs a vacation.

During Moira’s pre-trial hearing the Queens are faced with the idea that she may be charged with the death penalty. Her lawyer assures her that this won’t be the case but Moira still has some secrets that she’s hiding. Meanwhile Roy gets directed to a girl called Sin in his search for the Black Canary, he chases her all the way to a clock tower and after being knocked out gets to finally meet the masked heroine.

Who else really likes this character? I'm crossing my fingers that she doesn't die.

In a series of flashbacks of the island Oliver and Slade leave Shado in their hideout so that the two of them can find out where the strangers on the island came from. From the top of a large hill they see a ship just off-shore which then suddenly begins to launch missiles at their hideout. Oliver runs back to try and save Shado but on his way he’s knocked out and when he comes round he finds himself locked up in a cage.

The Doll Maker kidnaps Quentin and Laurel and makes him watch as he prepares to kill her. Oliver arrives just in time to stop Laurel from being suffocated followed quickly after by the Black Canary who goes straight after Matis. Oliver quickly joins in the fight and while he is fine with simply capturing Matis and putting back in jail the Black Canary decides that he needs a more severe punishment and shoots him in the heart before disappearing into the night.

Quentin thanks the Hood for saving his daughter. They bond and it's beautiful.

With Matis gone Team Arrow go back to trying to find Starling City’s newest vigilante.

Fantastic episode. I am so in love with this series and each episode just keeps getting better. Black Canary’s entrances and exits are so dramatic and I love them almost as much as I love her fighting. I also appreciated that little scene we got of Oliver and Diggles wrestling, these writer sure do understand their audience. Plus can I take a moment to discuss that little smile Oliver had when Quentin was awed by Felicity’s mad computer skills- I just love when she makes him smile (which is like all the time let’s be real). It was also great to watch Oliver and Quentin working I hope we’ll be able to see them pair up some more this season.
