Max and the Midknights are back! The first book in this series was of my favorite releases of 2019 and it was my very first introduction introduction to the work of Lincoln Peirce. I have been waiting anxiously for the second book in the series so I am thrilled to have the chance to read it and review as part of this book tour!

Battle of the Bodkins picks up shortly after the end of Max & the Midknights with Max now enrolled in knight school as the first girl ever to do so! While she’s focusing on coursework something evil is brewing in the background and it’s not long before Max and the Midknights are called back together for another kingdom-saving adventure!

This time, however, they’re facing a real challenge: defeating themselves! Or, more accurately, Bodkins – creatures who take on the looks and mannerisms of the people they copy. The Bodkins are not happy with the people of Byjovia and after generations of planning and plotting they are ready to take over. And when it is all but impossible to tell who is really themself and who is an immitation how will Max and her friend prevail?

Battle of the Bodkins is a fantastic adventure that serves as the perfect follow up to Max and the Midknights. Full of silly humor and wonderful storytelling, Battle of the Bodkins is the perfect middle grade pick. I love Lincoln Peirce.s blend of written prose and comic panels. And as silly as some of the jokes and moments are I can never avoid laughing. I will always recommend this series – especially for reluctant readers! My oldest really enjoyed the first book and I can’t wait to share these books with my youngest who I know will just love them.

About the Author

Max and the Midknights, Lincoln’s first book for Crown Books for Young Readers, originated as an unfinished spoof of sword & sorcery tales. Returning to the idea years later, Lincoln rewrote the story around Max, a ten-year-old apprentice troubadour who dreams of becoming a knight. The result is a high-spirited medieval adventure, supported by hundreds of dynamic illustrations employing the language of comics. Of the lively visual format that has become his trademark, Lincoln says, “I try to write the sort of books I would have loved reading when I was a kid.” When he is not writing or drawing, Lincoln enjoys playing ice hockey, doing crossword puzzles, and hosting a weekly radio show devoted to vintage country music. He and his wife, Jessica, have two children and live in Portland, Maine Jessica, have two children and live in Portland, Maine.
