During his hour long Q&A session with audience members, Marsters discussed some of the behind-the-scenes details of working with the Buffy team and told anecdotes from his time on other sets.
Below are some of the highlights from the event if you missed it!
- When asked about who was best for Buffy to end up with at the end of the series, Masters says that Spike would be best for her once he matured.
- Marsters also said one of the best parts of playing Spike was that Joss Whedon didn’t have a defined role for the character so Spike was written multiple arcs.
- Marsters pitched his own spin-off for a Spike story, but Joss rejected it because Angel was already airing.
- Before taking the role on the television series, Marsters watched the original Buffy movie – and he wasn’t very impressed.
- The Once More With Feeling musical episode of Buffy almost didn’t happen – the actors were concerned with the musical theater roles and weren’t confident that Joss could write his own musical.

[photo taken at phxcc 2016] - One of the most difficult aspects of filming Buffy was that James had to have his hair bleached weekly – and that resulted in sores on his head which wouldn’t heal before the next bleaching session.
- During the kiss scene with John Barrowman on Torchwood, Marsters brought his then-fiance (now wife) to set. Marsters said she really enjoyed watching the scene.
- Marsters said he would love to come back for next season of Supernatural if asked, and mentioned that while on set, the boys played a prank involving jiggling his legĀ just out-of-frame during one of his scenes.
