Loot Crate vs. Nerd Block – June 2014

Loot Crate and Nerd Block are two very big subscription box companies. They both have a large fan base and they both consistently give out awesome product in their boxes. Loot Crate costs $13.37 a month plus shipping which comes out to be around $20 a month. Meanwhile, Nerd Block costs $20 a month but, since it ships from Canada, costs close to $30 after shipping. Regardless of which one you get, each box’s content always adds up to be more than what you initially paid for. Another perk is that you get to collect nerdy t-shirts. Loot Crate will have a few t-shirts throughout the year in their boxes, while Nerd Block has a shirt in every box (this could be the reason for the more expensive price).

Again, this month I got both of them to compare.

Loot Crate

Loot Crate’s theme this month is Transformers. They included a Marty McPrime t-shirt, Transformers vinyl figure, Transformers sticker decal, Transformers Hex Bug, Warheads candy, MLG wristband, and an MLG starter kit. Overall, a solid box with cool items. I got Autobots for my decal but wanted Decepticons. The t-shirt is pretty nice, it combines Back to the Future with Transformers and Marty transforms into a DeLorean. The little vinyl figurine is nifty (I got Optimus Prime) because it comes with a detachable gun and you can move all the appendages. The decal is great, you can slap it onto anything to show your side. The Hex Bug is interesting, it’s a little vibrating robot that “transforms” when it starts vibrating. It opens up its wings to show what bot is underneath. Candy is always yummy, although all my Warheads melted in the AZ heat. The last things in the box were the MLG (Major League Gaming) stuff. I don’t see how this ties into Transformers and it’s a little weak. I like that they include stickers to support the teams but I won’t wear the wristband and I’m not going to sign up online.

Nerd Block

This month’s Nerd block was unique because it included two t-shirts. One t-shirt was a throwback to Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow man and the other was X-Men’s Sentinels. They were both summer blockbuster movies past and present. The other items in the box were a Doctor Who mystery vinyl figure (I got the 9th Doctor), a Mario Kart racer (I got Luigi), a Minecraft collectible sticker (Creeper), and a Nerd Block Exclusive pin art. The Doctor Who vinyl figure comes with its own detachable Sonic Screwdriver. The Mario Kart racer is a like a little Hot Wheels car and it rolls around, so you can have a little kart race around your house. The pin art thing is cool (you’ve seen them everywhere) because you can make any shape or object imprint in the pins to display on your desk…appropriate or inappropriate. Overall, not bad because of the two t-shirts and figurines. I do like the pin art thing because I always play with them in stores and now I have one of my own.

June 2014 LCNB-5112As to which one is better? I think it’s a tie this month. They both had t-shirts and great figurines. Loot Crate always has a central theme around their boxes so I think that’s nice because it keeps everything together. They also have a lot more items that they create personally from their Loot Crate Labs. Nerd Block on the other hand will always have a t-shirt and really cool collectible figurines. Plus it looks like they’re making their own exclusive things too. To each their own.

However, don’t just take my word for it.

Try both out, see which one you like. You won’t be disappointed either way.
