Star Trek Online has been a trekkie staple for many years; six, to be exact.

It was originally released in 2010 and provided to the masses free of charge. In the game, players choose whether they want to be a Federation Captain, a Klingon warrior, or a Romulan commander and quickly begin their adventure into the beyond. The game boasts and extensive list of “episodes” that provide players with endless adventures, and focuses on bringing the Star Trek universe straight to your computer screen.

As a long running game, they have had time to establish a strong player base, and at Star Trek: Mission New York they premiered their latest expansion into the world of consoles. Now available on Xbox One and Playstation 4, Star Trek Online remains free for all and is more accessible than ever.

Check out some of the key features:

  • THE DEPTH OF STAR TREK
Captains can explore the galaxy, visiting all 4 quadrants, including 100+ iconic Star Trek locations. During these missions, they will interact with original characters from the television show voiced by Trek actors, including Jeri Ryan, Michael Dorn, Tim Russ, and more.
  • YOUR MISSIONS, YOUR WAY
Players can choose from three classic Star Trek factions (Federation, Klingon and Romulan) to create their own Captain and customize their bridge crew and starships for a completely personalized Star Trek experience.
  • EXPANSIVE CONTENT
Star Trek Online on PlayStation®4 and Xbox One will launch with over six years of content, including over 130 featured episodes. The game will receive regular updates to include new locations and characters straight from the Star Trek universe.
  • UPDATED GRAPHICS AND CONTROLS
A brand new UI and control scheme has been added, allowing players to navigate both space and ground combat with ease. Modern lighting technologies have also been added to improve the overall visual quality of the game.

At Star Trek: Mission New York I had the chance to play the freshly updated Playstation 4 version of the game, as well as talk with the executive director behind Star Trek Online. The updated game is definitely worth praising and the entire booth bustled with excited fans trying to get their hands on the game. As someone who is not a huge gamer, but is a huge Star Trek fan, I was immediately drawn into the game through the graphics alone.

When talking with Steven Ricossa Jr., executive director behind the game, I asked him about the graphics and he laughed and explained that moving from PC to console required serious upgrades. They applied the latest gaming technology to the game and brought it into the 21st Century, leaving it to compete with other popular games without contest.

The other impressive point I took home was just how hard they work to keep the game moving. Ricossa explained that it is a long term game, not something to play and ditch, and that the minds behind it work hard to continually produce new content so that it is never stale. Add in the three different paths players can explore, and anyone who loves Star Trek, or online gaming in general, will find hours of entertainment packed away in a game that is 100% free.

When asked about how they keep it free, Ricossa admitted that there are bonuses people can buy, and understandably so. There are outfits, skins, weapons, ships, and other items that can help players boost game play. However, he made sure to hit it home that even those who can’t spend money on the game can continue to play to completion.

Star Trek Online is currently available on PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4. You can learn more about the game HERE. Big thanks to Ricossa and his team for taking time to talk with us at Star Trek: Mission New York.
