NYCC 2017: Saturday Highlights

Saturday is always the biggest day of the convention, not only in terms of crowds, but in terms of panels, guests, and activities as well. Make sure that you know which venue your event is being held at and plan in time for walking and crowds.

There are a lot of opportunities for television fanatics to get their first, exclusive looks at new shows today as well as plenty of niche panels covering diversity, cosplay, and all manner of random topics (like friendship!).

The Tick

Amazon Prime Video is bringing the star-studded cast of The Tick to New York Comic Con and sparing no expense on sneak peeks, Q&As, and more surprises! After their strong presence at SDCC this past summer and the success of the show so far, it’s great to see them in attendance for  the fans.

Kodansha Comics Presents Celebrate Fairy Tail: A Chat with Hiro Mashima
11:00am – 12:00pm @ Hammerstein Ballroom

One of the most coveted signings we saw through the early lottery system, Hiro Mashima is stateside to discuss his popular manga and career. You won’t want to miss his talk and attendees to the panel will be given exclusive gifts.

Dynamite Presents 45 Years of Seeing Red: Celebrate Red Sonja’s History and Her Battle for Female Empowerment in Comics

Explore female empowerment through comics with a focus on the iconic Red Sonja. With a female stacked panel of influential creators, including Gail Simone, this is bound to be an engaging discussion. There is more than four decades of history to cover and all that groundbreaking to explore!

REPRESENT: The Rise of Characters of Color in Sci-Fi Film and TV

As diversity continues to be lauded in the entertainment industry, more unique voices are going to be afforded the opportunity to speak. Join panelists at NYCC to discuss people of color making it in the industry, both behind and in front of the camera, and what amazing things are being done to keep those voices strong.

Freeform’s Super Sci-Fi Q&A Panel with Shadowhunters and Beyond
12:00pm – 1:30pm @ Madison Square Garden

Make note of the venue for this panel, as Madison Square Garden is a short hike from the convention center itself. Freeform is combining two of its most popular shows into one super-sized panel in a super-sized venue. Join the cast and crew of both shows for a sneak peek at upcoming seasons and plenty of Q&As.

Making Ships Set Sail: Fandom & Relationships

It’s rare to find anyone these days who doesn’t have a fandom of some kind – whether they realize it or not (sports fandoms are the ultimate fandoms, amiright?) – and it’s great to see the convention scene finally tapping into that potential. Join panelists as they discuss their passions, fan interactions, and how the audience can get involved in fandom.

STARZ Original Series Ash vs Evil Dead
12:30pm – 1:30pm @ Hammerstein Ballroom

It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for the next season of Ash vs. Evil Dead, but it is finally upon us! Join the cast, crew, and the King himself – Bruce Campbell – to talk about season 3 of the hit series and catch a preview before it begins airing!

An Hour with Adam Savage
12:45pm – 1:45pm @ Main Stage

With no specific topic in mind, that means its a free-for-all panel on the Main Stage! Ask Adam Savage about Mythbusters, his hobby creations, his Brain Candy stage show, his Maker Tour, his cosplay and more! And let us know if you find him on the convention hall floor! Keep in mind that the Main Stage room clears after every panel.

DC Spotlight on Batman

Look at this panel list: Cully Hamner (Batman: The Signal), Tom King (Batman), Sean Gordon Murphy (Batman: White Knight), Tony Patrick (Batman: The Signal), Scott Snyder (All-Star Batman), James Tynion IV (Detective Comics), plus others – and tell me you’re not excited to see what this amazing group of creators has to say about Gotham’s Dark Knight! 

Let’s Not Make This Weird: A Friendship Workshop

This feels like a fantastic little hidden gem shoved right into the middle of your Saturday. Join panelists from Cards Against Humanity, BioWare, and more to talk about making friends. It’s New York Comic Con – the perfect place to find at least one other weirdo who is into what you’re into! They’re ready to give you all the advice you’ll ever need.

Comics for Causes: Planned Parenthood & ComicMix
1:30pm – 2:30pm @ 1A02

As activism permeates through all of life, it’s inevitable that it touches comics as well. Come find out about ComicMix and their latest work slated for publishing, Mine!, a comic anthology celebrating the amazing work of Planned Parenthood, as well as benefiting this organization. Find out more about PP and how the project is making a difference from panelists.

SYFY Panel Block: Happy! & The Magicians
2:00pm – 4:30pm @ Hammerstein Ballroom

First up in this super-sized programming block is a screening of SYFY’s newest show, Happy! Afterwards, join the cast and crew in a conversation that is recommended for those 18+. Once that’s completed, the stars of The Magicians take the stage for a sneak peek of season 3! 

Telling Stories with Patrick Rothfuss, Jonathan Coulton & Friends

The panelists are such an eclectic mix of folk, from authors to musicians and more, that their guidance and advice on storytelling is bound to be as varied as they are. Don’t miss out on learning their strategies for character creation and moving through the process of getting a story finished.

It Devours! The Writers of Welcome to Night Vale Discuss Science, Faith, Romance, and the Toothy Power of The Smiling God

Join the Welcome to Night Vale creators to talk about their next book, It Devours! They’ll also be discussing podcasting, their live shows, and more. The last book was a treat for fans and newcomers to WTNV. I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store next.

The Future is LGBTQ

BOOM! Studios and GLAAD worked together on this panel, bringing some amazing talent from the comics world – including Steve Orlando, Brooklyn Allen, James Tynion IV, and more – to have an honest discussion about LGBTQ representation. Not only are they covering comics, but all of pop culture and the future of representation.

Star Trek: Discovery
3:45pm – 4:45pm @ Madison Square Garden

Now that everyone has gotten at least half a taste of the new Star Trek: Discovery, fans can head to Madison Square Garden for a panel including the cast and crew behind the newest series. If the buzz online is any indication, people are going to love it or hate it a whole lot. 

Behind the Scenes of Freeform’s New Series Siren
4:00pm – 5:00pm @ 1A06

How do you feel about mermaids? Freeform’s newest show is going to give you an all-new look at the mystical creatures the only way Freeform can – with some seriously sinister undertones. Join the cast and crew for a first look at this new series! 

Celebrating 100 Years of Jack Kirby: The King’s New York
4:00pm – 5:00pm @ 1A02

It’s not a comics convention until you acknowledge one of the true greats of the industry. Join panelists and the historian host in tracing the history of New York, as seen through Jack Kirby’s eyes, through the Marvel universe! It’s bound to be fascinating, inspiring, and educational!

Universal Television’s New NBC Series Reverie Pilot Screening and Panel

There’s no better time to check out a new show than when you’re surrounded by hundreds of your newest friends. Experience NBC’s latest thriller with a pilot screening and then think up your best questions for the cast and crew of the show!

Psych Reunion and Movie Sneak Peek

It’s been three years since the show ended, but Psych fans are still clamoring for more! And thanks to fan support, there’s a movie headed to USA this December! They previously stopped by SDCC earlier this year, but now it’s NYCC’s chance to reunited with the cast and crew of the show for an exclusive look at the upcoming film.

Netflix Presents Marvel’s The Punisher
5:15pm – 6:45pm @ Madison Square Garden

Fans still don’t have a premiere date for the much-anticipated next installment into the Netflix Marvel universe, but perhaps we’ll get one here? And with an hour and a half blocked out for the panel, perhaps fans can expect more – like a pilot screening? At the very least, we’re promised an exclusive first look at the upcoming season and that alone is worth it, throw in the cast and crew and a Q&A and this panel is not to be missed.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan
5:30pm – 6:30pm @ 1A06

Amazon’s also bringing the John Krasinski-helmed action series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan to the convention. With cast and crew in attendance, there will be an exclusive sneak peek for the audience, the world premiere of a teaser trailer, and plenty of time for Q&As.

Mythbusters LIVE
5:30pm – 6:30pm @ 1A21

Join the new Mythbusters ahead of their Science Channel show premiere. This is going to be one lively panel, promising exclusive clips, limited edition giveaways, a LIVE experiment and even more surprises. Get their behind the scenes stories from set and have your science questions answered!

Crunchyroll Industry Panel
5:30pm – 6:30pm @ 1A10

Anime lovers are very familiar with the streaming service, Crunchyroll, but old and new fans alike can attend this panel to hear about the latest anime and manga being offered by the company. There will be prizes given out and a special gift for all attendees at the panel.

Legion M: How the Power of Fans United Will Forever Change Hollywood
7:45pm – 8:45pm @ 1A02

We’ve participated in a few Legion M organized events at this point and I can’t help but be impressed by the company. Stay up late and head to their panel to hear about what they’ve accomplished so far and how you can invest in the company yourself! Shareholders can meet with the folks behind the company as well and hear some special announcements for the future.

AMC’s The Walking Dead
7:45pm – 8:45pm @ Madison Square Garden

Season 8 and the 100th episode are just around the corner – October 22! – so join the cast and crew of The Walking Dead to talk about their journey so far and what can be expected in the explosive season premiere. Our guess is that there will be no fewer than 10 people on stage at any given time during the entertaining panel.

NYCC Eastern Championships of Cosplay Presented by Singer
8:00pm – 10:00pm @ Main Stage

Close out your Saturday night with the Eastern Championships of Cosplay! Gather at the Main Stage to watch plenty of cosplayers battle it out for prizes and to qualify for even more prestigious competitions in the future. These are some of the best cosplayers in the world!
