The New Mainstream: Diversity & Activism in Four Colors – 10:15 AM – 11:00 AM Downtown Stage

Yes, I am waking up at 8am on a Sunday to get my butt to this panel! Featuring graphic novel and comic book writers of different backgrounds, this panel focuses on different stories matter. Diversity is becoming the norm, which is achieved by artists and writers speaking out. Come hear Thi Bui (The Best We Could Do), Marjorie Liu (Monstress, X-Men), Joe Illidge (Catalyst Comics) and Magdalene Visaggio (Kim & Kim: Love Is A Battlefield) tell their stories! 

Real Science, Big Adventure: Bill Nye the Science Guy’s New Series for Kids – 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Main Stage

Bill Nye is back in a big way. Whether it’s his Netflix series, or his bow-tied on-air showdowns, he’s ready to make science cool again. Written with co-author Greg Mone, their new book series, Jack and the Geniuses, is targeted at middle schoolers who want adventure, mystery, and real-world science in one epic series. Even if you’re not the target age for this book, science is never out of style, and neither is Bill Nye. 

Justice for DC and YA Heroes – 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Room 1E14

The Wonder Woman movie just opened, kids are being introduced to classic comic heroes and villains, and DC is having a moment. What better way to celebrate the resurgence of characters like Batman, Catwoman, and Superman than with YA authors Marie Lu (Midnightstar), Leigh Bardugo (Six of Crows), Matt de la Pena (Mexican Whiteboy and The Living) and Sarah J. Maas (The Thrones of Glass series)?

It Devours! The Writers and Cast Members of Welcome to Night Vale Discuss Science, Faith, Romance, and the Toothy Power of The Smiling God – 11:15 AM – 12:00 PM Downtown Stage

If Bookcon is focused on fandom, Nightvale is a must. Featuring the creators of the cult podcast Welcome to Night Vale, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, and cast members  Meg Bashwiner (Deb), Cecil Baldwin (Narrator), and Dylan Marron (Carlos), this panel focuses on the Night Vale book It Devours!  As an added bonus, Cecil Baldwin will perform an exclusive reading! 

Kids Book Blockbusters – 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM Main Stage

There’s no denying that panelists Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Mary Pope Osborne (Magic Tree House), Kwame Alexander (The Crossover), and Lemony Snicket (A Series of Unfortunate Events) are absolute masters at their craft. They will take to the stage to discuss their trials and tribulations, and a few new projects. Remember, this is a Main Stage Events, so you will be required to scan your Badge in the morning. Krysten Ritter Spotlight – 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Room 1E14

Yes, that Krysten Ritter. Jessica Jones, Breaking Bad, Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 Krysten Ritter. Her debut novel is exactly what you would hope for: a psychological suspense novel featuring a female protagonist fighting city corruption and facing a checkered past. I for one am very excited to see what Krysten has to offer the world of literature. 

Ryan Higa Writes Good – 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Main Stage

Youtube Star Ryan Higa moves from screen to page in his first memoir. His has one the coveted “Most Subscribed Youtube Channel Award” more than once, and his comedy videos receive millions of views each week. Important! This is a Main Stage panel, so you must scan your Badge in the morning. Look for the line dedicated to the Main Stage Panel for Ryan Higa. When you arrive back in the Queue Hall in 1C prior to that Panel, you will scan your Badge again for entry into the Main Stage. Don’t forget! 

The Last Tycoon Beyond the Book: Bringing Fitzgerald’s Final Novel to Life – 4:15 PM – 5:00 PM Room 1E14

No, Matt Bomer didn’t write a book. But he is playing one of America’s great novelists, F. Scott Fitzgerald in Amazon Studio’s upcoming series The Last Tycoon. The show will focus on Fitzgerald’s last unfinished novel. The glitz, glamour, and grit of 1930s Hollywood are sure to be a highlight. Bomer is joined by producers Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Captain Phillips) and Christopher Keyser (Tyrant, Party of Five).
