Synopsis of 1×06: Wynonna hunts down a Revenant responsible for attacking Homestead 15 years earlier; Waverly unravels a mystery left by her uncle.

Rating: ★★★½☆☆

This week’s Wynonna Earp took a Donner Party turn with a family of cannibal revenants. Although I would call this episode the weakest episode to date for the show, it still had some high points that would further the upcoming episodes and the overarching plot of the season.

Wynonna, the leading protagonist of the episode, had the least development in this episode, leaving much of the growth for Waverly, Dolls, and even Doc. After a saucy training session with Dolls in the morning and inheriting her uncle’s bike, Wynonna spends much of the episode chasing after the cannibal revenant family at a local farm.

This episode also introduces a new character cryptically named the Blacksmith. She is an interesting character, sometimes-overacted by Rachael Ancheril, who not only helps Wynonna find her revenants but also helps Waverly after she becomes the Keeper of the Bones.

Waverly, through her investigative skills, finds what Curtis left for her hidden inside Shorty’s piano. Instead of inheriting a motorcycle, she inherits a skull. The note left by Curtis tells her that she must go to the Blacksmith. After binding her to the skull that she found, the Blacksmith freaks out and it’s clear that something very bad has happened.

It’s not really clear what she’s done, but given the fact that Doc has discovered a couple of incomplete skeletons at Bobo’s construction site, it’s clear the skull is a missing piece to Bobo and the Stone Witch’s plans. With the bones bound to Waverly, it looks like the Witch might be coming for Waverly and for the Blacksmith.

In an attempt to find out where Clootie, aka the Stone Witch, is Doc goes to Dolls in hopes that he might have some information about her location. In exchange for this intel, Dolls tells Doc to find hard clues and evidence about what Bobo is doing. Of course, Doc is unsuccessful, which seems to set Dolls more on edge.

Without much evidence to give Dolls, Doc visits Wynonna. After hooking up in the middle of the woods last episode, the two of them have an awkward couple of conversations about how they move forward. It seems like they’re deciding to just be friends, but nothing is ever easy, so it remains to be seen what will happen to the two of them.

For the past few episodes we’ve been dancing around what happened to Dolls in the past, who he is, and what’s going on with him. In this episode, we see him struggling with addiction and watering down his dosage of a drug that the Black Badge Division is supplying him with.

Although he gets his fix by the end of the episode, it’s clear there’s something very bizarre happening with Agent Dolls and his blue heroin. And it looks like his bosses aren’t going to be supplying him with any more of the drug until he starts showing some hard results. His eyes turn snake-like and, as far as we know, he turns back to normal.

Not much more is given on the subject, but this is a huge chunk of information about Dolls and sets off another trail of clues to what could be going on with him. He spent a lot of the episode and last episode searching for hard evidence that he could show his bosses. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when his bosses come in play in future episodes and where that leaves him and his team in Purgatory.

Oh, also, high-five to Waverly for finally dumping Chase.
