Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto are all set for Suicide Squad, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a film described as “The Dirty Dozen with super-villains.”

Warner Bros. has announced Smith will play Deadshot, the Batman villain that never misses, Hardy will play Rick Flag, an elite soldier and the group’s leader, and Robbie confirms all of those rumors by playing the fan-favorite Harley Quinn, sometimes known as the Joker’s girlfriend. Speaking of which…

Jared Leto is the Joker, which the internet will be totally cool with (not really).  The recent Academy Award winner has the tough job of reinventing the now-iconic role, and trying not to live in the shadow of Heath Ledger’s turn as the Clown Prince of Crime. Ledger, of course, earned a posthumous Academy Award for his Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight. Those are some big (clown) shoes to fill, but Leto seems game.

Jai Courtney (Divergent, Terminator: Genysis) and Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina) have also signed on as (Captain) Boomerang and Enchantress, respectively.

Variety reports that the role of Amanda Waller, the government agent that assembles the villains and possible Nick Fury of the DC Cinematic Universe, is still in contention. “The studio’s shortlist of actresses being eyed for the role includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, whom sources say would be WB’s first choice for the part.”

With its unique villain-centric story and diverse mix of actors, Suicide Squad is gearing up to be one the DC Universe’s most interesting films.

David Ayer (FuryEnd of Watch) is set to write and direct the DC Entertainment film, due out Aug. 5, 2016.
