TNT At Comic-Con International: San Diego 2014 - "The Last Ship" Panel

We caught up with the cast and producers of TNT’s The Last Ship last week at San Diego Comic Con, and got to talk with Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra, Adam Baldwin, Charles Parnell, and Travis Van Winkle as well as the executive producers Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane about the fate of the members of the USS Nathan James as well as where we would find ourselves at the end of season 1 and where we’d then go towards in season 2.

Eric Dane, who plays the leader and commander of the USS Nathan James Commander Tom Chandler, teased us that the high energy of the season would not die down and that the season finale is going to be unreal.

We’ll see the Russians return and by the end of the season they’ll have officially hit land. Seeing as we have seen them go on land already in the season, we can only assume that he means United States land? Or perhaps an official landing base where the crew will be able to stretch their legs on land?

Though I doubt it will be that relaxing. Adam Baldwin, who plays the XO Commander Nathan Slattery, has said that by season 2 everything will be turned on its head. Baldwin’s character, Slattery, has been seen butting heads with Chandler for a few episodes over the crisis, but when asked if mutiny would ever be on the horizon, Baldwin quickly shot it down. “Mutiny is out of the question, we have to save the world first,” he said, calling it a dangerous word to even bring into the equation.

Meanwhile, Travis Van Winkle (Lt. Danny Green) has told us that in the rest of season 1 we will see more and more untrained, unqualified crew asked to step up and start taking more active roles, suggesting that the ranks are starting to dissolve a little.

And what will happen when they finally get their feet on US soil? Will they find their families and friends? It’ll hardly be that easy. For now they’re all alive on assumption alone.

We’ve seen this hope fuel many of the members of the ship, including the Commander and his XO. It’s also what will be the obstacle should any romance blossom between Eric Dane’s Tom Chandler and Rhona Mitra’s Rachel Scott.

Mitra responded to questions about possible romances with the fact that Chandler is a married man and has a wife and kids at home and they would have to respect that for the characters’ sake. However she did acknowledge that that could change depending on the writers and the producers and the reaction of the audience.

Speaking of romance, we caught up with Travis Van Winkle’s response to his complicated relationship with Marissa Neitling’s Lt. Kara Foster, and here was his response.

A push and a pull? Well, after their relationship was revealed to the captain, we’ll see how long these star-crossed lovers have to last on the ship.

TNT also teamed up with the men’s lifestyle magazine CraveOnline to throw a big bash on the decommissioned USS Midway in San Diego. When we mentioned getting to film on an actual guided missile destroyer, Dane confirmed that the cast and crew would make their way down to San Diego to shoot on a destroyer, specifically the USS Halsey and the USS Dewey.
